Five ways in

Answer five questions, browse the game in the order it happens, search the words, go by what keeps going wrong, or start from what just happened out there.

Question 1 of 5

Who are you asking for?

This only changes how the answers are worded.

How this works

What the five ways are for

They all reach the same ideas. The difference is what you already know when you arrive.

You know something is wrong, not what

Use the questions. five of them, about a minute, and the last two do the real work: your level filters everything above it out, and the complaint you pick pulls the ideas that answer it to the top.

You know when in the game you are stuck

Browse by moment. eight moments in the order they happen to you, from the week before a game to the drive home afterwards. Every idea on the site sits in exactly one of them.

You already know the words

Search. It looks inside the ideas themselves, their titles and their text, so a word like yorker or sweep or nerves will find them. It does not search the longer writing around them.

You know exactly what keeps happening

Go by problem. ten complaints written the way a player would actually say them out loud, each one answered by the ideas that address it.

Something just happened out there

Start from the result. eighteen things that go wrong, and then the reason it keeps happening rather than just the fix, because the reason is the part worth knowing.

One thing worth saying plainly. The moments and the complaints are groupings written for this site, so that every idea on the site is reachable in more than one way. The ideas themselves, and the people they came from, are from the notes.

The pathway

The green, amber and red tags on the cards across this site map onto these three rungs. Nothing here gets thrown away later. The advanced version of every idea is the same idea, done under more pressure and with less time.

Rung one

Around twelve

  • Watch the seam all the way onto the bat
  • Still head at release
  • Length first, then line
  • Play it in the box, hit it straight, keep it on the ground
  • Score off every ball you can, run hard, back up
  • Bowl one repeatable good ball before you own a variation
Rung two

Thirteen to fifteen

  • Know exactly where off stump is, and leave well
  • A real plan against spin: eye line, no planted foot, the sweep
  • Power on purpose, not by swinging harder
  • Read a field and name the gap before the bowler runs in
  • Two deliveries you can bowl on demand under pressure
  • A game face you can put on, and a routine between balls
Rung three

Sixteen and up

  • Batting to the match situation, not to your mood
  • Managing form: knowing your own way back onto the track
  • Setting fields and bowling to the shot you want
  • Self coaching from your own video, honestly
  • Building an innings, and finishing games
  • Being the person who makes the rest of the team better
